Solar Battery Rebate & Payback Calculator Australia

Estimate eligible 2026 battery STCs, upfront discount, annual solar value and simple payback for an Australian home battery.

LIFESTYLE & HOME

Model an Australian solar-battery project using the Clean Energy Regulator battery STC tiers effective from 1 May 2026 and your own quote, tariffs and expected solar production.

The calculator estimates certificate quantity from usable battery capacity, then values those certificates at the price you enter. It separately estimates annual value from self-consumed solar and exported energy to avoid presenting the incentive as a guaranteed cash amount.

Disclaimer: The REC Registry calculator and an accredited installer are the source of truth for eligibility and final STCs. STC market value, retailer discounts, state programs, feed-in tariffs, degradation and household load profiles can materially change payback.

Calculator information

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter nominal and usable battery capacity plus the pre-discount installed quote.
  2. Enter the STC value offered by the registered agent; the $40 clearing-house benchmark excludes GST and remains editable.
  3. Add annual solar generation, self-consumption, import tariff and feed-in tariff.
  4. Compare annual benefit and simple payback with installer modelling.

Battery STCs and solar value

STCs = tiered eligible kWh × 6.8; annual value = self-used kWh × import rate + exported kWh × feed-in rate − maintenance
  • May–December 2026 tier weights are 100% to 14 kWh, 60% from 14–28 kWh and 15% from 28–50 kWh.
  • Capacity above 50 kWh is excluded from this estimate.

Worked example: 13.5 kWh battery

Given:
  • 13.5 kWh nominal and usable capacity
  • $40 clearing-house benchmark excluding GST
Steps:
  1. Estimated certificates: floor(13.5 × 6.8) = 91
  2. Illustrative certificate value: 91 × $40 = $3,640

Result: Replace the benchmark with the agent offer, subtract the estimated certificate value from the quote, then divide by annual net solar value for simple payback.

Frequently asked questions

Is the certificate price fixed by the government?
No. The calculator keeps the per-STC value editable because certificate market value and agent offers can change.
Why is only 50 kWh eligible?
The Clean Energy Regulator states that only the first 50 kWh of usable battery capacity is eligible for battery STCs.
Does this include state rebates?
No. Add any confirmed state or retailer benefit to the quote separately and verify that programs can be combined.
