About the Hebrew Calendar
The Hebrew calendar is luni-solar: months follow the moon (29 or 30 days), but a 13th month (Adar II) is inserted in 7 of every 19 years to keep major holidays aligned with the seasons.
The religious year begins in Nisan (spring, when Passover falls), but the civil year — the year number we use today — starts in Tishrei (fall, with Rosh Hashanah). 2026 corresponds to Hebrew year 5786 / 5787.
Days in the Hebrew calendar run from sundown to sundown, so a "Hebrew date" technically begins at sunset the prior Gregorian evening. This converter uses the calendrical pairing (the Gregorian date is the day with the larger overlap).
Calculation uses the Reingold-Dershowitz arithmetic algorithm. For ritual purposes (Shabbat timing, fast start/end), always consult a local Jewish authority — observance starts at sundown.
