Dog & Cat Age in Human Years Calculator

Convert dog and cat age to human years using AVMA formula by breed size, with life stage and lifespan estimates.

LIFESTYLE

Dog and cat age calculator in human years using the AVMA (American Veterinary Medical Association) formula, accounting for breed size.

Four tabs: dog → human (five breed sizes: Toy / Small / Medium / Large / Giant), cat → human (kitten through geriatric), reverse calculation (human → pet), and a 1-20 year reference table with life-stage labels.

Disclaimer: Estimates only — individual breed, health, and lifestyle factors affect actual lifespan.

Pet Age Calculator

Convert dog and cat ages to human years (or vice versa) using the latest AVMA formula. Includes life stages and lifespan by size.

AVMA Formula

Dog: Year 1 = 15, Year 2 = +9 (24), Year 3+ = +4/+5/+6/+7 per year (Small/Medium/Large/Giant).
Cat: Year 1 = 15, Year 2 = 24, Year 3+ = +4 per year.

Fun Facts

  • Dogs age fastest in year one (equals 15 human years) and year two (+9 more). After that, the rate depends on size.
  • Large and giant breeds age faster and live shorter (~7-10 years) than small dogs that can live 14-18 years.
  • Cats age more slowly once adult (about 4 human years per cat year). Many indoor cats live 15-20 years.
  • UC Davis study (2019) using DNA methylation suggested: human age ~ 16 x ln(dog age) + 31 for Labrador-type breeds.
  • A 1-year-old cat equals a 15-year-old teen, a 2-year-old cat equals a 24-year-old. A 12-year-old cat = 64 human years.

Calculator information

How to use this calculator

  1. Select the animal type (dog or cat) in the available tabs.
  2. For dogs, choose the breed size category: Toy (<10 lb), Small (10-22 lb), Medium (22-55 lb), Large (55-99 lb), or Giant (>99 lb).
  3. Enter the pet's age in years (decimals allowed, e.g., 1.5 years for 18 months).
  4. Click Calculate to view the human-age equivalent, life stage (puppy/junior/adult/senior/geriatric), and care recommendations.
  5. Use the Reverse tab to convert a human age into the equivalent pet age.
  6. Compare with the 1-20 year reference table for long-term health planning.

AVMA / Wang et al. (2020) formula for dogs and AAHA for cats

Dog (Wang): HumanAge = 16 * ln(DogAge) + 31 ; Cat (AAHA): year 1 = 15 human years, year 2 = +9 (24), each subsequent year +4
  • DogAge = dog's age in years
  • ln = natural logarithm (base e)
  • Result is adjusted by breed size: Giant +10-15%, Toy -5-10% relative to baseline

The 'multiply by 7' myth is inaccurate. Dogs reach adulthood at 1-2 years, then aging slows. Large breeds age faster in their later years.

Worked example: Large breed Golden Retriever, age 5 years

Given:
  • Type: Dog
  • Breed size: Large (55-99 lb)
  • Age: 5 years
Steps:
  1. HumanAge = 16 * ln(5) + 31
  2. ln(5) = 1.6094
  3. HumanAge = 16 * 1.6094 + 31 = 25.75 + 31 = 56.75 years
  4. Large adjustment +5% = 56.75 * 1.05 ≈ 59.6 years
  5. Life stage: Mature Adult (approaching senior)

Result: ≈ 60 human years, in the mature adult phase; begin senior screening (joints, heart, kidneys) every 6 months.

Frequently asked questions

Is the '1 dog year = 7 human years' rule correct?
Not accurate. A 2020 epigenetic study from UC San Diego (Wang et al.) shows dogs age very rapidly in their first year (equivalent to a human teenager by age 1) and then slow down. The x7 rule is only a rough approximation based on average lifespan. The logarithmic formula based on DNA methylation is far more representative.
Why do large breed dogs age faster?
Giant breeds like Great Danes have a lifespan of 7-10 years, while Chihuahuas can live 15-18 years. Rapid growth in large breeds triggers higher oxidative stress and cancer rates. Elevated Insulin-like Growth Factor (IGF-1) also accelerates cellular aging.
When is a cat considered senior?
According to AAHA and International Cat Care, cats are considered senior from 11-14 years (equivalent to 60-72 human years), and geriatric from age 15 onward. In this phase, annual blood, urine, and blood pressure tests are needed for early detection of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and hyperthyroidism.
How is a kitten's age calculated?
Month 1 kitten ≈ 1 human year, month 3 ≈ 4 years, month 6 ≈ 10 years, month 12 ≈ 15 years. Sexual maturity occurs at months 5-9. Spay/neuter is recommended before the first estrus cycle at 4-5 months of age to help prevent mammary tumors.
What indicates that my pet is aging healthily?
Key indicators: stable appetite, maintained body weight (BCS 4-5/9), at least 30 minutes/day of activity for dogs, glossy coat, minimal dental plaque, and no PU/PD (polyuria/polydipsia). Annual checkups with a CBC + chemistry blood panel are the gold standard for early detection.
